I was forty-five and restless, my children all but grown
And haunted by some questions about a man I should have known
I never called him daddy; he left when I was two
I went searching for the man I never knew

A man who burns his bridges, isn’t looking to be found
It took 3 years of searching but I finally tracked him down
The Sierra Nevada Mountains, in a one street mining town
I stood face to face with the man I never knew

All the questions in my mind I couldn’t bring myself to ask
So we told each other stories from 40 years gone past
Tales of dreams and schemes that turned to whispers in the grass
Stories from the man I never knew

I could see his health was failing, I thought Lord I’ve come too late
